Iván García (taekwondo)

Iván García Martínez (born 10 August 1997) is a Spanish taekwondo practitioner. Competing in the men's +87 kg division, García Martínez won the silver medal at the 2022 World Taekwondo Championships. At the European Taekwondo Championships, he won a bronze medal in 2021 and silver medals in 2022, 2024 and 2026.

Career

García Martínez represented Spain in international taekwondo tournaments. In 2019, he competed in the 87 kg event at the 2019 World Taekwondo Championships in Manchester. He defeated Turkey's Hasan Can Lazoğlu in his opening match, before losing to Russia's Vladislav Larin in the round of 16.

In 2021, he won the bronze medal in the +87 kg event at the 2021 European Taekwondo Championships held in Sofia, Bulgaria. During the tournament, he defeated North Macedonia's Dejan Georgievski and Azerbaijan's Radik Isaev to reach the semi-finals, where he lost to Belarusian athlete Arman-Marshall Silla and finished third. The same year, he won gold medals in the +87 kg event at the Turkish Open, Spanish Open, Tallinn Open and Polish Open.

In 2022, García Martínez won the gold medal in the +87 kg event at the Spanish Open in La Nucia. At the 2022 European Taekwondo Championships in Manchester, England, he won the silver medal in the +87 kg event. The same year, he also won the bronze medal in the +80 kg event at the Paris Grand Prix.

At the 2022 World Taekwondo Championships held in Guadalajara, Mexico, he won the silver medal in the +87 kg event. He defeated Jerry Luis Vázquez Ortiz, Omar El Yazidi, Maicon Andrade and China's Song Zhaoxiang to reach the final, where he lost 2–0 to Mexico's Carlos Sansores and finished as world runner-up.

In 2023, he competed in the +87 kg event at the 2023 World Taekwondo Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan, where he lost to South Korea's Bae Yoon-min in his opening match. During the same season, he competed in the +80 kg event at the World Taekwondo Grand Prix stages in Rome, Paris, Taiyuan and Manchester. He also won gold medals in the +87 kg event at the Serbia Open and Sweden Open.

In 2024, García Martínez won the +87 kg event at the Spanish Open in La Nucia. At the 2024 European Taekwondo Championships held in Belgrade, Serbia, he won the silver medal in the +87 kg event. During the same season, he also won a bronze medal at the Croatia Open. He missed the 2024 Summer Olympics because of a knee injury sustained before the Games.

In 2025, he won bronze at the Dutch Open, silver at the Serbia Open, and gold medals in the +87 kg event at the European Clubs Championships, Tallinn Open and Spanish Open. He also won bronze at the European edition of the WT President's Cup in Sofia. At the World Taekwondo Grand Prix Challenge, he won bronze in the +80 kg event in Charlotte and gold in the same weight class in Muju.

At the 2025 World Taekwondo Championships in Wuxi, China, García Martínez competed in the +87 kg event. He defeated Senegal's Seydina Limamou Laye Seye 2–1 in his opening match, before losing 2–1 to South Korea's Kang Sang-hyun in the round of 16.

In 2026, he won the silver medal in the +87 kg event at the Dutch Open in Eindhoven. At the 2026 European Taekwondo Championships held in Munich, Germany, García Martínez won the silver medal in the +87 kg event. He defeated Poland's Zbigniew Jabłoński, North Macedonia's Dejan Georgievski and Croatia's Ivan Šapina to reach the final, where he lost to Great Britain's Caden Cunningham and finished as European runner-up.
