World Tessellation Day is a celebration of all kinds of tessellations, held on 17 June, the birthday of M. C. Escher. Emily Grosvenor, an enthusiast for tessellation and author of the picture book Tessellation!, was the initial instigators for the day, and the hashtag #WorldTessellationDay was rapidly taken up on Twitter, especially in Europe and then North America. Observance of the holiday spread quickly through Internet, social media, and grassroots celebrations. The Escher Museum, Escher in Het Paleis, tweeted its celebration of the day, asking which tessellations were readers' favourites. Emily Grosvenor outlined 23 ways to celebrate the day on her blog. The Balearic Mathematical Society invited readers of its website to send in images of tessellations.
