SmartMouth is the brand name for a line of dental hygiene products designed to provide long-term fresh breath. SmartMouth brand products, originally marketed under the name TriOral, include mouthwash, toothpaste, gum, and mints. History In the mid-1990s, Dr. Israel Kleinberg, Chairman of Oral Biology and Pathology at the State University of New York, Stony Brook dental school, invented the zinc ion technology that is used in SmartMouth Mouthwash. SmartMouth Mouthwash was then developed by Dr. Marvin Cohen, Chairman of Triumph Pharmaceuticals Inc and author of the halitosis section of the Encyclopedia Britannica (1998 Medical Edition); and Dr. Susanne Cohen, President and CEO of Triumph. Composition SmartMouth Mouthwash contains a two-bottle system that requires the two main ingredients to be mixed just prior to rinsing. SmartMouth uses free, available zinc ions to bind to the protein receptor sites of the bacteria, which prohibits the protein particles from binding. This prevents metabolism of the protein particles and the production of new volatile sulfur gases. The zinc ions act like a barrier around the bacteria, preventing the production of new bad breath gases. Effectiveness SmartMouth has been clinically proven to provide fresh breath for 12 hours after each rinse.
