Sajeed Akbar Sheikh is a social worker, activist and politician from Jogeshwari East, Mumbai, India. He is the founding member of the NGO, Modern Youth Association. Social Service 7 January 1993 During the time of communal riots, Radhabai Chawl which is situated in a predominantly Muslim area, was set on fire. Around 9 Hindus lost their lives in the incident and many more were injured. The chawl was completely destroyed and the remaining tenants had nowhere to go. YUVA and MYA rebuilt the chawls to facilitate the rehabilitation of these tenants. However, due to the tense atmosphere in the area, most tenants refused to return to the chawl. The rebuilt structure was then converted into a Community Resource Centre for social welfare and was subsequently run by YUVA for many years thereafter. |
