National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists

The National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists (NAFP) is a nonpartisan, taxpaying membership organization that helps people who want to become physicians or medical scientists pursue their goals. The organization is based in Washington, D.C. and works toward identifying, encouraging, and mentoring students interested in becoming medical scientists, technologists, engineers, and mathematicians. The academy provides online leadership training on a variety of subjects including confidence building, study skills, time management, listening and speaking skills, negotiation skills, and problem solving. The organization’s events, such as The Congress of Future Medical Leaders, are by invitation through academic nomination and students must have a minimum 3.5 GPA to attend.<ref name="cc2n" /><ref name="yahv" /> At the congress, scholars can compete for three academic scholarships: a full scholarship to attend medical school and two $10,000 medical scholarships.<ref name="b2c2" /> In March 2013, the American Heart Association (AHA) announced its support for The National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists.<ref name="va4t" /><ref name="cab3j" /> Other supporting institutions include American College of Surgeons, American Academy of Family Physicians, American Medical Student Association and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.<ref name="va4t" /><ref name="cab3j" /> On March 27, 2013, The National Association of Secondary School Principals approved NAFP’s Congress of Future Medical Leaders for placement on the NASSP National Advisory List of Contests and Activities for 2013-2014.<ref name="futur" />
