Pathrose Parathuvayalil

Dr. Pathrose Parathuvayalil is an Ayurveda scholar and physician hailing from Kerala, the southern state of India. He is the Chief Physician and Managing Director of Parathuvayalil Hospital, the first ISO 9001:2000 certified Ayurveda Hospital in India, which is located in Keezhillam, Kochi, Kerala.
Early Life and Education
Pathrose was born on 24 January 1946 into Parathuvayalil family which consisted of several traditional Vaidhyas namely Varkey Vaidhyan and Poulose Vaidhyan who were practicing in the area of treating fractures and orthopedic cases. "Vaidhya" is the forename given to traditional Ayurveda practitioners in Kerala. It was Poulose Vaidhyan who launched the Parathuvayalil Ayurveda Hospital at Keezhillam in the year of 1955; with just 4 inpatient rooms and a very small medicine manufacturing and dispensing area. Pathrose was the second son of Sri P.V. Poulose Vaidhyan and Smt. Annamma Poulose. After completing schooling from Keezhillam Upper Primary School and Valayanchirangara High School, Pathrose joined Mar Athanasius College, Kothamangalam for Pre University Course, which is equivalent to Higher Secondary education today.
Career
Inspired by the knowledge of treatment and medicine of his father and grandfather, he joined Thiruvananthapuram Ayurveda College in the year 1964 where from he secured First Rank in Kerala University for Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine (BAM) in the year 1970. He did his Master Degree in Kayachikithsa and Marma Chikithsa (General Medicine and Orthopedics in Ayurveda) from the same college. Dr. Pathrose parathuvayalil holds the first Post Graduate Degree in Ayurveda in Kerala. In the year 1984, on the demise of his father Poulose Vaidhyan, Dr. Pathrose took over the leadership of the hospital. Under his leadership, the group expanded its operations and launched it new divisions for manufacturing and marketing Ayurveda Medicines and Orthocare products.
Awards
* In the year 2012, Dept. of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of Kerala honoured his 40 years of great contributions to the field of Ayurveda with "Vagbhata Award".
Innovation
After years of research, in 1998 Dr. Pathrose Parathuvayalil designed and fabricated a machine for Pizhichil, a treatment that is very effectively used for all rheumatic conditions. Continuous flow of oil, filtering of oil in every circulation, thermostatically controlled heat are the major advantages of this machine over the old conventional methods that are in practice. The procedure carried out using this machine is much more effective and efficient without contravening any fundamental principles of Ayurveda.
Achievements
* Managing Director, Pam labs India Healthcare Pvt Ltd: Dr. Pathrose Paratuvayalil had a long standing desire to start an Ayurveda pharmaceutical company adopting modern technology but without compromising traditional values and principles of Ayurveda. Pam Labs started in 2007, strictly adheres to and excels the WHO GMP standards in manufacturing and it produces 350-plus classical preparations and patents in several herbal preparatory medicine categories.
* Managing Director, Herbix India Pvt. Ltd: This is the marketing division of Dr. Pathrose Parathuvayalil Group (PPG) which undertakes distribution of it’s medicines.
* Managing Director, Ortho-Care Products Pvt. Ltd which manufactures orthocare products which confirms to British Pharmacopeia Standards for its cotton crepe bandages.
* Faculty of Ayurveda at University of Calicut in the year 1999-2002.
* Honored by Dept. of AYUSH Govt. of India as “Guru” in Rashtriya Ayurveda Vidyapeeth.
Personal life
Dr. Pathrose Parathuvayalil got married in the year 1974 to Dr K.V. Prasanna an Allopathic physician who graduated from Calicut University. Since then Prasanna is in charge of Modern Medicine Dept. of Parathuvayalil Hospital and Orthopaedic Centre which serves a back up unit to the hospital in Emergency care. His son, Dr. Sunil Paul Pathrose, M.S.(Ortho) and Daughter-in-law Nina Sunil Paul, B.Tech, MBA makes a committed teamwork in the hospital.
