The Gakio-Walton International Scholars Program was established by the Walton Family Foundation in 2006 with an $11.7 million endowment to enable outstanding students from Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East to study at the college-preparatory boarding school Choate Rosemary Hall. The awardees are given funding for high school study that covers all tuition, boarding, academic supplies, and return airfare costs. Choate’s Gakio-Walton Scholars have gone on to attend universities all over the United States including Harvard University, Princeton University, Rice University, Smith College, Franklin & Marshall College, Northeastern University, American University, Wesleyan University and Manhattanville College.
