Mark Alexander Mandel

Dr. Mark Alexander Mandel, MD is a plastic surgeon, and the author of one of the first books on plastic surgery for men, ‘Sculpture, A Man’s Guide to Cosmetic Surgery’. Retired from practice, he is currently a neutral court appointed medical expert.
Early life and education
Dr. Mark A. Mandel was born on May 12, 1939 in New York, NY to Charles Mandel, M.D., a family practitioner and World War I Veteran, and Sarah Mandel, one of the first female elementary school principals in New York. Growing up in the Bronx, Mandel played many sports including baseball, stickball, “off-the-point” and basketball while attending the Bronx High School of Science.

He attended Colgate University He spent most of his senior year in medical school working on kidney transplantation with Dr. Paul Russell, then Chief of Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital.
After medical school, he moved to Cleveland, Ohio for six years of surgery training at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. Following Cleveland, he spent two years of research in cancer immunology at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. After that he had fellowships at the University of Miami in Cosmetic Surgery and cleft lip repair and in Phoenix in complex hand reconstruction cases.

Career
Mandel was appointed the Director of Plastic Surgery in Cleveland, as well as an Associate Professor in Medicine and Dermatology at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He was also the Director of Plastic Surgery at the Veterans’ Hospital which was the regional center for reconstruction treating many injured Vietnam War Veterans. In Cleveland he developed and chaired many national courses in trauma for the American College of Surgeons and in cancer treatment for the American Cancer Society even before the continuing medical education requirement became mandatory for physicians in the United States. Dr. Mandel is certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Plastic Surgery. He is a member of numerous plastic surgical and academic societies and a member of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists. He has performed over 18,000 surgical procedures with considerable expertise in the physiology and care of the skin and its contents.
