Mystery of the Sancy is a novel written by Shalmalee Suresh, of , a multi-talented 17 year old girl. This is her début novel and was published in 2013 when she was the Vice Captain of her school (Batch 2013-2014). Shalmalee wrote this novel when she was 15 years old. During her childhood, she was fond of reading adventure novels. But she found that most of them were written in the 'holiday season' so she came up with the idea of adventure in school. This book was released on May 27th, 2013 amidst well known chief guests. The novel release function was also telecasted in the Doordarshan channel. Plot Introduction Here is a nutshell of this novel; Joannah Smith’s father got transferred here recently so everything is new for Joannah (the protagonist). Her friends Jennifer, Jill and the twins Jasmine and Josephine tell her a lot about her new school Harrow’s International and its Principal, Mrs. Filomina. Within a few days, to the children’s horrifying shock, they learn that their Principal has confessed that she stole France’s Beau Sancy diamond. Her granddaughter Mendy was missing too. But they believe in their Principal and they find out that it was all a lie and it is someone else who has the Sancy and the Principal’s granddaughter. As they set out in search of Mendy, they discover an ugly truth that is hard to digest. They find themselves in the middle of an adventure that they are not aware of. Will they be successful or will the men get them before that?... Structure and Genre "Mystery of the Sancy" falls under the children's mystery and adventure genres. The character sketch of each child in the novel has been aptly described by the author. The characters of the novel encounter many thrilling and 'goose bump-arousing' situations. The protagonist Joannah is a new girl in the school 'Harrows International' but the staff and the other children welcome her with such warmth that she builds complete trust in the school. This theme plays an important role as it leads the children to discover many unknown things. The atmosphere of 'Harrows International' that the author has mentioned about in the novel has some of its sources from that of her own school. This book is available in most of the leading book stores which include Sapna Book House, Gangarams, Book Worm, Hema Book Stores, and so on About the Author Shalmalee Suresh was born in Bangalore on May 11th 1996. She completed her kindergarten and high school in Bishop Cotton Girls School and did her 11th and 12th also in the same school. She had just completed her 11th at the time of the release soon after which she was appointed the Vice Captain of her school. Shalmalee started writing poems and short stories at the age of 6, some of which have been published in the school magazine with her own drawings. Many of her articles along with the drawings that she herself sketched have been published in Leading Newspapers. Shalmalee is not only a profound writer but also is talented in various other fields. Some of her achievements are as follows; Shalmalee has won an award for drawing in a State Level Competition conducted by Chitra Kala Parishad Academy. On the World Environment day the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board conducted a drawing competition in which she secured the second place. She won prizes for the drawing competitions conducted by the Kemp Fort, Camlin and Animal Welfare as well. Shalmalee plays the keyboard as well. At the age of 8, her keyboard performance was telecasted in many television shows. Shalmalee is also known for her graceful dancing. She received the ‘Prathiba Puraskar’award and the 'Miss. Raksha Rai Memorial' award for ‘Excellence in Classical Dance’ in the year 2010. She won the first place for folk dance in the State Level Hejje Gejje competition conducted in the Mysore Palace. Her dance performance was telecasted in the well-known show Madhura Madhura Sumadhura Gana in the Doordharshan channel which was a tribute to late Dr. Vishnuvardhan. In the field of music, she took part in the Sangeetha Sanjay in the Kannika Parameshwari Temple at a very tender age. She is a 1st place winner of the competition conducted by the Jnana Jyothi Kala Mandir for classical singing. She also received the Prathiba Puraskara Award for her singing.
