History Markes International Ltd was founded in 1997 on the Royal Mint Industrial Estate, Llantrisant (South Wales, UK) to manufacture, market and sell instrumentation and consumables for analytical thermal desorption. The company has arrangements for distribution and market development with Agilent Technologies and Thermo Fisher Scientific. Markes International supplies equipment to companies worldwide, and in 2006 85 percent of its products were exported. Products and applications The company’s products detect compounds in air or gas streams using analytical thermal desorption and associated sampling techniques. Applications include the analysis of hazardous chemicals in urban air, ensuring the purity of carbon dioxide in the drinks industry, emissions from materials, chemical warfare agents in government and military facilities, and testing of perfumes for toxic chemicals. and RFID tags for sorbent tubes. In 2009 the company received awards from Rhondda Cynon Taf Business Club for "International Business of the Year" and "Rhondda Cynon Taf Company of the Year". In 1999, a breath sampler developed by the UK Health & Safety Executive in collaboration with Markes International and TCM Associates received a prize at The Chemical Engineers' Excellence in Safety and Environment Awards.
