Plot
The story revolves around Jimmy Threepwood, a boy unloved and not cared for by his parents living a life without friends in dull grey room. At the age of eleven Jimmy discovers he is destined to one day destroy the world. His powers are very limited at first and on his eleventh birthday he is collected by the Gatekeeper, a sinister cloaked creature and taken to Elksidian Forest. In the confines of the forest Jimmy becomes a student of darkness and it is here where most of the first novel’s events take place. As Jimmy’s powers grow and the future is revealed he quickly realises he is different from his three companions. He is different in that he still cares for his parents and has no intention of destroying the world.
The environment Rich Pitman created is completely separate from reality yet intimately connected to it. While the fantasy land of Narnia is an alternative universe and the Lord of the Rings' Middle-earth a mythic past, the villainous world of Jimmy Threepwood exists in parallel within the real world and contains magical versions of the ordinary elements of everyday life such as a hopping rusted mini called Frank the Frog. Many of its surroundings and locations are recognisable, such as Rich’s home town of Newport, South Wales.
Origins and publishing history
In 2011, Pitman had recently been to a cinema where he came up with the idea to write a story for the view point of the villain. Pitman gives an account of the experience on the publisher’s website saying,
“I read so many books where they are about the hero and they get into a struggle but always seem to win. But what about the villain? Who are they? What happened to them? So I decided to write Jimmy Threepwood from the viewpoint of the villain. It needed to be dark and full of twists but also a rich, deep storyline. So I grabbed a pencil and started the drawing board there and then. The pictures were very basic, but I knew what each on meant.”
Pitman completed Jimmy Threepwood and the Veil of Darkness in October 2012. The story was virtually finished but it had to be put to one side as he set off to Mexico to get married. Upon his return the manuscript was sent to several prospective agents. Ghostly Publishing contacted him a few months later and offered him a five book deal to write the series.
During a following interview Rich stated somewhat sheepishly. [http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/wales/posts/policeman-hopes-to-emulate-harry-potter-success "I've been a bit lucky”] he said, "In the short term I want children to enjoy and become immersed in the story. I am hoping that my story will inspire people to have a go at writing and stretch their imaginations to their limits."
