Jäger Matthias Rosenberg (born 2006) is a Canadian political candidate and activist. He gained attention in the lead up to the 2024 BC election, for running for political office at the age of 17, making him the youngest Canadian to seek elected office. In March 2025, at the age of 18, he was acclaimed as the NDP candidate for the federal electoral district of West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky Country. Rosenberg is known for his advocacy on mental health, environmental issues, and democratic reform. Early life and education Rosenberg was born in Sechelt, British Columbia, and grew up in Gibsons. He holds dual Canadian and German citizenship. In the winter of 2024-2025, he spent a semester on exchange in Fulda, Germany. While living there he campaigned against far right extremism in the 2025 German election. Political career BC NDP nomination race (2024) In late 2023, Rosenberg announced his intention to run for the BC NDP nomination in the Powell River-Sunshine Coast riding for the 2024 BC election. He was one of 5 candidates running to succeed retiring incumbent Nicholas Simons. His campaign received notable support, helped in part by the BC NDP's internal voting age of 12, and included a notable endorsement from Avi Lewis. However Rosenberg's candidacy was officially approved very shortly before the vote and faced procedural obstacles. Randene Neill ultimately won the nomination to a close vote on June 8, 2024, and the general election. Rosenberg's campaign was the first time a Canadian under the age of 18 was permitted to run for office, as he would have turned 18 by the time of swearing-in. Internal NDP activism Rosenberg has been an active member of both the federal and provincial NDP. He serves as the (YND) representative for the Powell River-Sunshine Coast NDP Electoral District Association (EDA) and as vice president of the West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky Country NDP EDA. In late 2024, he was elected Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Director for the BC YND executive and currently sits on the BC NDP Provincial Council as one of its youth representatives. Rosenberg has also been a vocal advocate for lowering the voting age and has volunteered with the Vote16 campaign. Federal candidacy (2025) In February 2025, Rosenberg announced his candidacy for the federal NDP nomination in the West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky Country electoral district for the upcoming federal election. His opponent withdrew shortly before the nomination vote, leading to unanimous support from the local NDP association at their nomination meeting on March 9, 2025. The election was called shortly afterwards on March 23, with the vote to be held on April 28, 2025. If elected, Rosenberg would become the youngest Member of Parliament in Canadian history.
