Herrenvolk is a German language word, reflecting Germany as a nation. The first part 'herren' is used as a male courtesy title, which can mean lord or master, with the English language equivalent being mister. The second part 'volk' refers to the German people. In extended usage, herrenvolk can be used to describe a group regarding itself as innately superior. Nazi usage During the 1930s the Nazis twisted the meaning of the word herrenvolk to mean a race born to mastery, i.e. the master race. The philosophy that the German Aryan race believes itself to be fitted and entitled by its superior qualities to the rule the world. |
