Sererism

Sererism is the religion, philosophy and way of life of the Serer people of Senegambia in West Africa. Their religion is more ancient than all the Abrahamic religions put together i.e. Islam, Christianity and Judaism. The Serer people are the descendants of the ancient Thiemassassians which is rooted in modern day Senegal. To be an Orthodox Serer, one must practice Sererism in its purest form (Henry Gravrand. La Civilisation Seereer, Pangool). The Serer people have used their ancient religion (Sererism) to defeat Islam and fight off Islamization for nearly one thousand years (Martin A. Klein. Islam and Imperialism in Senegal). They have also used it to rule over other people such as the Wolof people etc. It is in Sererism that the science, philosophy, cosmology, law, culture and history of the Serer people is embedded (Simone Kalis. Medecine Traditionnelle Religion Et Divination Chez Les Seereer Siin Du Senegal). To truly understand the Serer people, one must understand Sererism in its purest form, to which the Serers guard jealously.
Although Serer is an ethnoreligious word, meaning someone who is born a Serer and practices the Serer Religion/Sererism, someone who is not born a Serer may also convert but such conversion should only be performed by a Serer High Priests known as Saltigue in the ancient Kingdom of Sine which is now part of Senegal.
Ancient Sine is the Holy Land of the Serer people especially those who practice Sererism in its purest form Orthodox Serers / Orthodox Sereres. Every year, thousands of Serer people including Serer converts throughout the world make the pilgrimage to Sine to celebrate the Xoy Ceremony which is an ancient divination ceremony performed by Serer High Priests / Saltigue.
