Ed Mahfouz

Ed Mahfouz (born February 5, 1950), is a politician in Ontario, Canada. A member of the Liberal Party of Canada, he ran for a seat in the Canadian House of Commons in the riding of Nepean—Carleton in the federal election of 2008. He lost the election, with 16,743 votes, 23.4% of the votes cast. The winner was the Conservative incumbent, Pierre Poilievre, with 55.8% of the vote.
A retired secondary school teacher who taught science and mathematics, he was also a professor who lectured at the Faculty of Education at the University of Ottawa. He also coached successful athletic teams at the secondary school level including soccer, badminton and basketball. He also co-owned the Steak & Caesar restaurant in western Ottawa. He is a published author and university graduate, earning a masters in Education from the University of Ottawa. The same editorial was also critical of his principal opponent, Poilievre, describing him as a politician who "consistently underestimates the intelligence of the people in his riding" and "tells them what he thinks they need to know." The editorial was notably complimentary towards Green Party candidate Gadzala and NDP candidate Phil Brown.
Mahfouz was a supporter of former Liberal leader Stéphane Dion’s “Green Shift”, a plan intended to cut income taxes, price carbon emissions, and fight poverty.
