Christophe Beauregard

Christophe Beauregard was born on January 9, 1966 in Saintes, France. He lives and works in Paris. His studio is located at Bateau-Lavoir in Montmartre.
Biography
The formation
From 1985 to 1990 Christophe Beauregard studied English literature and civilization at the François Rabelais University of Tours. During his second year of study, linguistics, semantics, and the mode of narration in literary analysis complete his training. He became cognizant the narrative point of view, or perspective through which the story is viewed. It was in this class that he also learned how to apply formal structuralism, searching for symbols within the text. Christophe Beauregard would later incorporate these literary techniques into his photography, calling into question "Who is the audience?" and "How to use can direct the view in each frame?".
In 1990, Christophe Beauregard entered regional Ecole des Beaux-Arts. For his final student project in 1993, he produced his first photography series, "Pinder". This series of portraits in black and white highlights circus performers in their costumes. He chose to shoot them outside the circus tent, using this rough fabric as the backdrop for these seemingly straightforward portraits taken in natural light. Shot with a medium format camera (6x6 Mamiya C330).
Decisive moments
Throughout the years 1990-2010, Christophe Beauregard took photos for news sources such as Liberation, Le Monde, Telerama, L'Oeil as well as corporations like LVMH, Publicis Groupe, Havas Media Prisma companies... During this period, he focused on landing assignments and getting printed; the question of shifting his focus from commercial to artistic work did not arise until 2003, when Nicolas Thely (an art critic for Le Monde and Professor in Digital Humanities at La Sorbonne-Paris) and Hélène Sirven (also a Professor of Fine Arts at La Sorbonne) offered him to present its first series, Chirurgies. It will be part of an experimental exhibition at the Bureau d'hyphothèses (exhibition hall at La Sorbonne).
Themes of his work
Celebrity portraits
"Unlike others, I do not run all my models in a pre-established mold".
There, behind all his portraits, a real work of building trust and staging. Magazines ask Christophe Beauregard immortalize these "people".
"In the exercise of the portrait I seek no truth, no particular shape, but rather the meeting."
Laure Adler, Akhenaton, Mathieu Amalric, John Almeder, Yann Arthus-Bertrand, Georg Baselitz, Booba, Pascal Bruckner, John Cale, Decouflé, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Virginia Despentes, Emmanuelle Devos, Nicolas Duvauchelle, Fellag, Marie-Agnès Gillot, Michel Gondry, Dan Graham, Interpol, Aki Kaurismäki, Peter Klasen, Wolfgang Laib, Fabrice Luchini, Annette Messager, Philippe Meste, Takashi Miike, Jean-Pierre Mocky, Moebius, Peter Mullan, Sofi Oksanen, Erwin Olaf, Opus AKOBEN, Orlan, Jean d'Ormesson Othoniel, Richard Price, Atiq Rahimi, Yasmina Reza, Ugo Rondinone, Edith Scob, Alain Seban, Lhasa de Sela, Jorge Semprun, Michel Serrault, Ravi Shankar, Richard Shusterman, Simone Veil, Jacques Villeret, The Warlocks, Lambert Wilson...
Duality/Faux Semblant
Beauregard often returns to theme of the dual personality, and using the fake to reveal the truth.
Semantic Tramps
Dirty fingernails, sweaty brows and soiled clothes signal that these are the men and women from which society quickly averts its gaze. On the contrary, they are actors playing a role. Christophe Beauregard wished to "put perception into crisis". He claimed, "this work is a photographic writing, a means to compare a language state to a perception state."
Le Meilleur des Mondes ?
False pretenses give rise to a darker truth in the Le Meilleur des Mondes?. The subjects of this series are employees, volunteers or beneficiaries of the Basiliade Association, whose mission is to help people living with HIV/AIDS cope with their disease. In an attempt to question stigmas based on first impressions, Beauregard assumed the point of view of a commercial photographer taking generic corporate headshots to transform these people into "Employees of the Month".
Hush...Hush
With Hush...Hush, the roles are reversed as the paparazzi photographer becomes the subject of interest. Exposing the paparazzo's ruthless techniques of disguise that allow him to gain full access to the unsuspecting celebrity, he is transformed into a comical and almost endearing character.
Fantasy and the Imagination
Devils in Disguise
In this series, Christophe Beauregard tries to show how the imaginations of our offspring are formatted within the cultural industry. He frames these fixed images as if they were part of a comic strip, encapsulating the prime moment of the child's fantastical narration.
Review
This series features the cast of the triennial review of the Cercle Musical Bergerac, a production conceived, written, built and performed by a group of volunteers. Each amateur actor is presented in the form of diptychs, whereby one image is a portrait of the actor in his/her workplace or home and the other is a detail like a sequined hat or a flamboyant cape that sets the atmosphere of this colorful production. By showing the actors in their daily to lives, Christophe Beauregard seeks to examine this captivating production dream outside the usual distribution channels of culture.
Psychological Vulnerabilities
Chirurgies
This series is composed of chiaroscuro portraits of adult men and women, who recently underwent plastic surgery. Showing only the "after" shot, the viewer searches for the clues to indicate what has changed, but trapped in the picture, never gets the satisfaction of the truth.
Contemporary Individualism
Pentimento
In Pentimento, the viewer is privy to an intimate world of regret. Shot in the homes of individuals undergoing tattoo removal, this series portrays the subject's desire to undue their permanent act of rebellion.
