Guillaume Bresson

Guillaume Bresson is a French painter, born January 15th 1982 in Toulouse, France. He lives and works in Paris and Berlin.
From 2000 to 2001 he was Student of Fine Arts at the University in Toulouse-Mirail, France. In 2007 he finished his Degree with honours at École des Beaux-Arts, Paris.
His paintings show adolescents in fight scenes, primary in places like underground parkings and dark urban areas. Bresson plays with the idea of antique gladiator fights and uses their aesthetic and epic expressiveness in the context of the modern urban society.
Guillaume Bresson is currently represented by Bourouina Gallery, Berlin.
Technique
The work of Guillaume Bresson uses the very old technique of grisaille, the classical repertoire of the expression of passions. Also his work is inspired by the compositions of Nicolas Poussin to design contemporary history paintings dealing with urban violence. Bresson has actors staging for him to get his body studies. He choses the clothes they wear and accessories they have. He then takes photographs that assemble to set the composition of the picture, first as painted studies and then the final painting. This process gives theatrical mood to his paintings.
