Windy 505

Windy 505 is a fast all-terrain multipurpose vehicle developed by 505 Army Base Workshop, New Delhi of Electronic and Mechanical Engineers(EME). It have been developed for multipurpose role such as a mobile surveillance and combat support vehicle. Its low silhouette and ability to mount various combinations of weapons makes it a versatile vehicle. It is capable of moving in the desert and rugged terrain carrying reconnaissance equipment and armament. It has day and night vision (from Israel) capability besides a global positioning system (GPS)and can be equipped with missile. Windy 505 has a power-to-weight ratio 40:1 by far the highest in India. The vehicle design took two years for in-house research and development and trials in cross-country mobility. The vehicle has other variants such as Tuffy 505 and Hunky 505, both bullet-proof armoured attack vehicles.

Variant

  • Hunky 505 - It is a medium bullet-proof vehicle, developed at a cost of Rs 14 lakh, provide high degree of protection against small-arms fire and splinters of improvised explosive device blasts. It can accommodate a crew of six.
  • Tuffy 505 - It is a light bullet-proof vehicle, has a Swedish bullet-proof shield against fire from a distance of 10 metres, developed at the cost of Rs 12 lakh, mainly to counter insurgency and was protected against small-arms fire. It can accommodate a crew of four.

Both of the vehicles are ergonomically designed air-conditioned vehicles have splinter-proof glasses in the windows and windscreens and have sliding firing ports for firing of personal weapons. A variety of weapons ranging from LMGs, MMGs and missiles can be fitted on a mount which has a 360 degree traverse on both the vehicles.
