Schedule of the Rio de Janeiro bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics

The schedule of the Rio de Janeiro bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics was prepared by the Brazilian Olympic Committee (IOC) in close consultation with the International Federations (IFs). According to the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Bid Committee, it also meets the needs of the media and spectators through the spread of medals across the entire program, with two peaks at the weekends to coincide with prime time for spectators and television viewers. The schedule proposed by Rio de Janeiro was adhered to the general priciples of past Summer Olympics and Summer Paralympics schedules as well as considering local conditions. It would ensure a high impact for the audience, both in the venues and broadcast, and will enable efficiency in the use of existig and temporary venues.

The period proposed by the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Bid Committee to stage the 2016 Summer Olympics is from Friday, August 5, to Sunday, August 21, 2016. The 2016 Summer Paralympics begin seventeen days after the Summer Olympics Closing Ceremony, on Wednesday, September 7, and last until Sunday, September 18. Athletes will enjoy good climatic conditions in Rio de Janeiro during this timeframe, where mild southern hemisphere winter provides optimal environment for athletic performance. Warm days, cool nights and the absence of heavy rainfall combine to produce a favorable atmosphere for spectators. Average midday temperature of 24.2 °C (75.6 °F) is predicted during the proposed dates for the Summer Olympics, with temperatures ranging from 18.9 °C (66.0 °F) to 28.1 °C (82.6 °F).
