William G. Scanlon

William G. Scanlon was born July 21, 1991 out of Detroit, Michigan. Raised in the quaint town of Plymouth, he developed his own sound by combining pastoral elements of romanticism with a hint of jazz theory and style. Most well-known for his jazz saxophone sound, he is also well-respected in the fields of Music Education, Music Theory, and Composition.
Early Career
William began his musical study around the age of 5, when he began piano lessons with Mandy Nemic. After a challenging start musically with the piano, William's music educator, a Miss Mueller introduced him to the saxophone. William, or as he quickly became known as: Bill, began studding the saxophone in 6th grade under the direction of Michael Chemento. He continued the saxophone in his high school years receving lessons from Greg Normandin, his high school band director, Jeffry Ponders, Nick Stone, and John Nichol. As a high school senior, he was the featured soloist with the Detroit Catholic Central High School Marching Band in the streets of Hawaii, where he even stayed to jam with the local street performers.
It was also in high school that he started a young jazz group: The Midnight Quartet. The group was under direction of Bill and his best friend Jordan Fanco, and featured artist including: Scott Sansovitch, Michael McCaffrey, Ronald Marsh, Conner Williams, Drew Wildenhaus. He also performed in a award winning group known as The Rising Crisis where he played saxophone, guitar, and backup vocals.
He is a member of the Grand Valley State University New Music Ensemble.
