Vincent Sunderland

Vincent David Sunderland (January 8, 1952 - October 20, 2006) was a notable school teacher and vice principal for School District 2 in the Greater Moncton area.
Early Life
Vincent David Sunderland was born in Sydney, Nova Scotia to Roy Sunderland and Marguerite Ponee.
Career
Vince Sunderland started his career as a teacher at Harrison Trimble High School in Moncton, New Brunswick, teaching biology, and math. Sunderland stayed as a teacher their for 18 years until 1995 when he became a vice principal at Riverview High School in Riverview, New Brunswick. He stayed at Riverview High until the end of the 2005 - 2006 school year when he retired at age 54, due to his battle with brain cancer. In 1994, he joined the Board of Directors for the John Howard Society of Greater Moncton (a society to help build a better community). He stayed on the board until his death in October, 2006. In June, 2006, Sunderland received the Outstanding Educational Leadership Award (presented to an NBTA member who is a principal or vice-principal, or to an in-school administrative team that demonstrates the qualities of a successful educational leader and fosters a positive school climate). The award has since been renamed the 'Vince Sunderland Memorial Award'.
Death
Vince Sunderland was diagnosed with brain cancer in May 2009. Through the 17 months, he stayed strong and showed good spirits by staying involved in the community, staying as the vice principal at Riverview High School for one more year, and staying in his usual positive attitude. Vince Sunderland passed away at The Moncton Hospital on Friday, October 20, 2006 after losing his 17 month long battle with brain cancer.
Legacy and Influence
Vince Sunderland has stayed a very iconic and notable person around Greater Moncton, known for his positive attitude, great teaching, and great leadership skills. In 2008 it was announced that the courtyard of Riverview High School would have seats and a stage built, and be named the 'Vince Sunderland Memorial Stage'.
The Outstanding Educational Leadership Award (presented to an NBTA member who is a principal or vice-principal, or to an in-school administrative team that demonstrates the qualities of a successful educational leader and fosters a positive school climate) has since been named the 'Vince Sunderland Memorial Award'.
