Valerie Ding

Valerie Ding is an American high school scientist and pianist who attends the Catlin Gabel School in Portland, Oregon. In 2011, she was named a national finalist in the Broadcom MASTERS competition and was featured on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart for her work in the field of quantum physics. and was invited to the White House, the Office of Science and Technology Policy, and the United States House of Representatives to speak about women in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). The minor planet 27392 Valerie-ding is named in her honor. Her most recent research has focused on developing mathematical models to optimize the efficiency of quantum dot solar cells.
In addition to her scientific success, Ding is an accomplished pianist and is a two-time winner of The Van Buren Concerto Competition, in 2010 and 2012. She has performed with professional musicians of the Grammy-nominated Oregon Symphony and Oregon Ballet Theatre.
