Biography
Tomie Epps (born March 14, 1976) is an American mixed martial artist and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner from Kaneohe, Hawaii who is now living & fighting out of Las Vegas, NV. He is best known for his 4 fight consecutive knockout victories in Japan over japanese superstars Katsuhisa Fujii, Kazuo Takahashi, Takafumi Ito, and Kousei Kubota.
Early years
At age 7, Epps began studying tae kwon do and at age 14 he earned his black belt from TKD International. At 16, he begun training in brazilian jiu jitsu with the Gracie family in Honolulu and earned his black belt in 1999.
Tomie first started his fighting career kickboxing in 1994 (shortly after graduating from James B. Castle high school in Kaneohe, HI). After racking up more than a dozen victories in his kickboxing campaign & remaining undefeated through 1994-1996, he began focusing more on training & competing in mixed martial arts. Tomie's first professional bout came against Mark Hallister in 1996 where he defeated Hallister in 3:24 secs into the fight by KO. He earned his first major victory in 1999 against submission expert Remco Pardoel when he shockingly knocked Pardoel out with a flying knee early in the 1st round.
MMA Career
Throughout his career he has been considered as one of the most well rounded fighters in mixed martial arts by being gifted with superb striking skills and a ground game to match it. Tomie's only loss came as a controversial disqualification in 2004 when he knocked out James Banning with an illegal blow to the back of Banning's head. His MMA record consists of 23 wins with 1 loss. Of the 23 victories he owns, 14 have come via 1st round KO or TKO. Through 1996-2001 he fought in several non-sanctioned organizations such as The IFC, World Fighting League, and the Extreme Fighting Challenge. On October 14, 2006, Epps made his welterweight debut against Brazilian sensation Paulo Gaudia. This fight showcased his versatility as he landed several vicious leg kicks and scored 2 takedowns on the Brazilian early in the 1st round. He then followed up with a barrage of punches to Gaudia's face forcing the referee to call a halt to the action just 2 minutes into the opening round. On February 10, 2007, following his win over Gaudia, he made his Elite Xtreme Combat debut scoring another easy 1st round knock out victory over Jason Stevens.
