The Pubes are an American punk band from St. Louis, Missouri founded by Maysam Attaran and Randall Weatherall in April 2001. The original line up consisted of members from local groups the Perverts and Mini-Skirt Fetish, and included Maysam Attaran a.k.a. "BassAmp" (drums), Randall Weatherall a.k.a. "Gote" (guitar), (lead vocals) and Mario Viele a.k.a. "L.Vis" (bass). After a dispute citing "musical differences" Randall left after the first demo was recorded and Mario switched over to guitar. The band went through ten other bass substitues until finally finding Zachary Holtzman a.k.a. "Brown Bear" to complete the final lineup. Live Performances The Pubes are known best for their specific brand of pogo-hardcore punk music and energetic live shows featuring frontman Peat Henry back flipping into audiences, running up walls, and pelting oranges. Peat Henry has also been known to get black out, fall down wasted during earlier Pubes performances and tickle as many people has his hands could find in their wild state. L.vis has been known to destroy his guitar and drunkenly refuse to play any correct notes. Brown Bear is known to stop playing mid song on tour to take sips of his beer. The Pubes are viewed as pioneers for their groundbreaking approach to handling performance and physical contact with their instruments. Discography Lewd, Crude and Socially Unacceptable In 2001 The Pubes recorded "Lewd, Crude and Socially Unaccepptable" a nine song demo recorded at the RoadHouse, World HeadQuarters of St. Louis based indie label RoadHouse Tunes. The amps, drums and members were placed in four separate rooms and each room had only one mic. All four mics mixed live into one channel, with only a few minor overdubs of leads and background vocals added afterward resulting in a very lo-fi punk rock recording made by the original lineup. ===Wow, Baby! Let's Go Wheelin'!=== In 2002 The Pubes recorded "Wow Baby! Let's Go Wheelin'!" produced by Mike Hall and Mastered by Dan Stout. The recording for Wow Baby was done over two separate recording days, and marked the first attempt at real production in a studio. There are multiple guitar tracks and background vocals, and all of the instruments were tracked and layered individually for clear sound. At the time of these recordings Randall had quit the band but no replacement had been found, so this markes the one instance where Mario was both guitar player and bass player. This 18 track collection was originally intended to be released as two separate albums--totaling 21 tracks--but three tracks were cut once the decision was made to combine the material. Peat Sounds; In 2005 The Pubes Recorded "Peat Sounds;" produced by Matt "Bug" Meyer at Sonic Iguana Studios in Lafayette, Indiana. This is the first official album made with a full lineup, introducing the bass playing of Zach Holtzman as a full time member. The album was once again tracked in layers and virtual tracks for a pristine sound. Peat Sounds; was sonically much more accessible and leaned more toward Pop-Punk than full on Punk Rock. The album was met with some raving reviews and some more lukewarm reviews from the punk rock community. The album is full of choruses, guitar and percussion overdubs, background vocals and melody. The band toured with Italian hardcore legends Raw Power for two weeks upon the release of Peat Sounds; The Sad Burrito In 2008 The Pubes recorded The Sad Burrito at Firebrand Recording Studios in Saint Louis, Missouri with Brian Scheffer at the engineering helm. The album is complete with no release date set, but is rumored to have returned the band to the more traditional Punk Rock style. The rhythm tracks were also recorded live in the studio to capture a more band driven vibe. The band has assured its release will happen in due time, but the members are currently busy with their many side projects and other bands. Pontoon to Pluto Pontoon to Pluto is a rumored collected singles, compilation tracks and rarities album. There is no set release date currently. Tours and Accolades The Pubes were known for their innovativie, D.I.Y. marketing strategies such as hiring homeless people to sell their demos for one dollar and allowing them to keep all of the profits. The Pubes have embarked on four U.S. tours and have shared the stage with notable acts such as The Dickies, The Queers, Slaughter & The Dogs, Groovie Ghoulies, The Eyeliners, Tsunami Bomb, GBH, Subhumans, Raw Power, and The Misfits. In addition to performances at bar venues and concert halls, The Pubes were known for their more unconventional performance venues such as performing in kitchens, basements, grain silos, and haunted houses. It was even rumored that once the band played an entire set while "running down a hill" and having the audience follow them. In 2008, The Pubes were named 'Best Punk Band' by the RiverFront Times in St. Louis, Missouri. Controversy In early 2006, bassist Zach Holtzman and vocalist Peat Henry constructed a rudimentary guillotine on a street corner in downtown Little Rock, Arkansas, while on tour. Built out of discarded railroad ties and those plastic bags that hold newspapers, Holtzman and Henry managed to decapitate several local rats before the machine collapsed in on itself. Unfortunately, one of the rats happened to be noted Little Rock rodent Happenstance, a mouse regarded by many, including the mayor, as having "immense physiological and psychological capabilities rarely seen in most primates, let alone rodents." Holtzman and Henry were apprehended by Little Rock police the next day and held in custody for a period of 36 hours, in which the mayor and deputy attorney general approached their cell, shook their heads, and quietly walked away. The Pubes were fined $13 US and asked not to return to Little Rock for at least 6 months. They have not returned since.
