History
As an online gallery The GAG is particularly dedicated to lending its support to artists and art which may be undervalued in some (or many) ways by the art world. Such undervaluing may be commercial (lack of representation in public collections, museums, galleries), at auctions (under informed collectors), critically (in art journals and magazines), and/or academically. Featured artists at The GAG may also face additional prejudice due to race, gender, class and sexual orientation.
The GAG aims to pair each exhibition with a thoughtful essay written by another author/artist familiar with the exhibiting artist's field. The gallery believes that such critically-minded pieces support and ground the exhibitions for their audiences, and for their artists alike. The gallery's objective is for such coverage to additionally support the featured artists as they continue to advance in their career, applying for further exhibitions and studio/project funding. The GAG understands that well written essays and reviews can be difficult for some artists to attract yet, they are extremely advantageous when competing for financial funding or further exhibition opportunities. This is one small way the gallery is working to help level the playing field in the art world.
In its inaugural year, The GAG hosted 14 exhibitions including online performances, visuals art works, and written stories by artists living in Canada, the United States, Australia and Sweden.
