South Wales Long Distance Walkers Association

The South Wales Long Distance Walkers Association (LDWA) is one of the forty-three regional groups that are part of the Long Distance Walkers Association (LDWA). The South Wales LDWA was created in 1983 by Andrew Clabon, Gerry Jackson & Nick Kaye.
The geographical area that the South Wales LDWA covers stretches from Pembrokeshire in the west to Monmouthshire and the English border in the east and includes the Brecon Beacons National Park and South Wales Valleys.
Social Walks
The South Wales LDWA is a walking group that has an active membership and social walks are held most weekends. The walks are usually between 17-25 miles but occasionally, walks of 30-50 miles are enjoyed. The average number of attendees on social walks is 17. The walking pace of the South Wales LDWA is slightly faster than other walking groups with a moving speed of approximately 3mph on most walks.
Challenge Events
As well as organising social walks for its members, the South Wales LDWA organises three ‘challenge events’ per year. The events are called:
Rhondda Rollercoaster, Where Ravens Dare and Offa’s Twisted Wye Kanter.
Uniquely for LDWA events, videos taken by entrants who have taken part in the Rhondda Rollercoaster and Where Ravens Dare have featured on YouTube.
Archived Challenge Events
The South Wales LDWA has organised other challenge events but they are now archived. They are called the Caerphilly Summits and Taith Torfaen.
The Valleys 100
The South Wales LDWA organised the LDWA 100 mile walk in 2014. This was the 42nd time that the event had been held and the first time that it had been based in the South Wales Valleys. The walk started and finished from Pontypool. The event was held on a very wet Spring Bank Holiday weekend and consequently the event had a low completion rate of only 52%.
Y 100 Sir Fynwy
The South Wales LDWA is to organise the 2020 LDWA 100 mile walk. The event will be based on the county of Monmouthshire / Sir Fynwy, and will start and finish from Abergavenny. It will visit the Black Mountains, Monmouth, the Wye Valley, Chepstow, the Wales Coast Path, Wentwood Forest, and the Usk Valley. It will be held on the Spring Bank Holiday weekend in 2020.
