Shawn Schmidt

Shawn Schmidt (born c. 1988) is an American former decathlete. Schmidt grew up in Dallas, where he graduated from the St. Mark's School of Texas in 2006.
High School Track & Field
While in high school, Schmidt was the USA Track & Field Junior National Decathlon Champion (7264 points) and was the only Track and Field News All-American in the decathlon in 2006. As of 2021, he still owns the all-time junior decathlon record in the state of Texas. As of 2021 (fifteen years after he graduated), Schmidt still holds his high school's high jump record (6'11") and decathlon record and remains among the top 5 performers in 5 other events: 110m hurdles, discus, long jump, pole vault and the 1,600m relay.
In the 2006 Southwest Preparatory Conference meet, Schmidt won the 110 intermediate hurdles, the high jump, and the long jump, and finished 2nd in the discus (behind a teammate, Sam Acho, who went on to play in the NFL).
Schmidt was one of two American decathletes who competed in the .
Schmidt signed a National Letter of Intent to attend the University of Texas and compete on their track team.
College Track & Field
Schmidt competed for two years at the University of Texas before retiring from the sport after a significant knee injury. During both of those years, Schmidt was All Big 12 and Academic All Big 12.
During the 2007 outdoor season of his freshman year, he finished fifth in the decathlon at the Big 12 Championships (7221 points) and 23rd at the NCAA Division I Championships (6812 points).
During the 2007 indoor season of his sophomore season, he competed in the heptathlon, finishing eighth at the Big 12 Championships (5,414 points). During that season, he posted 6 personal bests (60 meters, 60-meter hurdles, shot put, pole vault, discus, and high jump).
After injuring his knee during the 2008 outdoor track season of his sophomore year, Schmidt retired from competitive athletics.
After track & field
Schmidt received his bachelors (B.A.), law (J.D.) and business (M.B.A.) degrees from the University of Texas, at Austin. As of 2021, he worked in banking.
