Green cape dress of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex
|
The Green cape dress of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex was a dress worn by her on 9 March 2020 at the Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey. It was designed by New Zealand-born fashion designer Emilia Wickstead. History Following their withdrawal from royal duties, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex attended their last engagement as senior members of the Royal family on 9 March 2020 at Westminster Abbey for the annual Commonwealth Day service. Beginning 1 April 2020, they began their transition into post-royal life and moved to Canada. Design For the service, Meghan wore a monochromatic emerald-green dress by Emilia Wickstead, a matching fascinator by William Chambers, and nude stiletto heels by Aquazzura; she accessorized with a chic mini bag by Gabriela Hearst. The dress featured 3/4-length sleeves, a structured bodice, and an asymmetrical cape design around the neck and left shoulder. Reception Critics said that the dress was a very bold statement by Meghan at her last engagement as a working member of the Royal family. Like Diana's outfit, Meghan also wore a matching green hat. The following day of the event, Harper's Bazaar wrote that: Meghan’s farewell tour fashion was rife with sweet revenge messaging. As a senior royal, the duchess favored black, navy, or a muted palette of buttery mauve and taupes. But in recent days, the colors turned unapologetically bold—like her critics never wanted her to be. It can’t be a coincidence that Meghan opted for not one but two capes, whether for superheroine vibes or to symbolize the couple’s flight... Meghan’s farewell looks were revenge dressing as its best... they projected a united front right down to their coordinating colors: Harry’s blue tie matched Meghan’s Wickstead dress on Thursday night.<ref name=evoke/>
