Sharif Gawad

Sharif Abdel Gawad was the British National Party's candidate in the Bradford city council wards of Bowling and Barkerend (2006) and Great Horton (2007). His grandfather was a Muslim convert to Christianity.
It was reported in The Guardian on 8 April 2006 that the choice of Gawad, a "totally assimilated Greek-Armenian", created a rift in the party. BNP spokesman Phil Edwards countered the criticisms, saying that those members who refuse to accept candidacy of Gawad had no place in the party.
The selection was reported to have caused some dissent within parts of the BNP "Mr Gawad fulfilled the BNP criteria of being "a member of the white European race of people", they affirmed.
