Zubair Farooq Khan

Zubair Farooq Khan is a prominent Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) person,
the deputy ameer (chief) of Jamaat-e-Islami, Islamabad, and a strong leader of the Golra Awans who are the most prominent among the Awan clans of the Potohar region. His family is traditionally associated with Jama’at-i-Islami and form the hardcore team of the Islamic party in the capital district of Pakistan.
For many generations, his family is known for their valour, righteousness and their political and armed struggle against the Sikhs and British colonial rulers. His family was part of the jihad waged by Syed Ahmed of Baraili against the Sikh rulers of Punjab and also faced great hardships at the hands of the British rulers after Zubair Farooq Khan’s great grandfather Jaffar Khan killed the famous General John Nicholson in a combat in Margalla hills. The spot where the general was killed is in Taxilla on GT Road nearly 20 minutes drive from Islamabad.
Zubair Farooq’s family also took an active part in the Pakistan movement and his maternal grandfather Muhammad Yusuf Khan was a member of the first constituent assembly of Pakistan after its independence in 1947. He was elected as member of the legislative assembly in the 1936 elections from the single constituency of district Rawalpindi. He was serving as member of the Punjab assembly in 1968 when he died. Zubair’s uncle Khuda Bakhsh Khan had served as the chairman of the Golra union council for more than a decade.
Recently, Jama’at-i-Islami Pakistan has nominated Zubair Farooq Khan as its candidate for the national assembly’s constituency of NA-49 mostly comprising the rural areas of Islamabad. His chances for winning the seat are quite bright as he enjoys the support of his own and many other tribes of the region along with a large number of local people in the urban and semi-urban localities who are staunch supporters and voters of Jama’at-i-Islami.
