Saurabh Kumar Sharma is a Ph.D. student at Jawaharlal Nehru University. A member of the Hindu-nationalist Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), he was elected joint secretary of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) in 2015, defeating the left-backed All India Students Association candidate by a small margin of 28 votes.
Sharma is from Mirzapur, in Uttar Pradesh, and has two siblings. He enrolled in JNU in 2012, for a master's degree in engineering, after which he began a Ph.D in neuroscience. He had no political affiliation before he joined the ABVP in 2012. Sharma filed a police complaint accusing her of having made anti-national statements.
