The Private Trainers Association (PTA) is one of the leading certifying bodies in the United States and worldwide for professional fitness and bodybuilding trainers. It was established in 1980 by noted bodybuilder and former Mr. USA titleholder Joe Antouri, and is based in Los Angeles, California. The PTA offers certification programs for personal trainers, nutrition specialists, weightlifting coaches, dance & fitness instructors and youth & health fitness coaches. A global organization with affiliates in twenty-two nations in the Americas, Europe and Asia, the Private Trainers Association provides professional accreditation, conducts on-going educational seminars, and updates members and the public on the latest industry and general physical fitness information. The Association's professional certification program features a curriculum that includes human anatomy, physiology, chemistry, kinesiology, microbiology, nutritional science & diet therapy, sports medicine, all aspects of weight training, and strength training. Specialty education programs and certificates are also offered in the areas of nutrition for elders and those rehabilitating from injuries, eating disorders, or various other medical conditions. The certification program of the PTA is recognized by the United States Department of Education, the California State Government Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education, and the International Federation of BodyBuilders (IFBB) among other regulatory bodies. Its certification courses, including Private Trainers Certification, Nutrition Specialist Certification and Group Exercise Certification are also approved for benefits under the G.I. Bill. A textbook put out by the organization serves as a university level informative reference source, and is updated regularly.
