Noctor

Noctor Noun A term used to describe a diverse group of professionals working within the National Health Service. It refers to para-medical specialists who undertake the diagnosis and management of medical conditions, a role traditionally limited to Medical Doctors.

Origins
Originating from the phrase Not Doctor the term was adopted in response to the frustration of health professionals at the bewildering variety of job titles used by this diverse group. Wanting to avoid the controversy surrounding titles such as Nurse Quacktitoner, which were seen as derogatory, the term Noctor became popular in the on-line medical community in 2007.

Future
It is proposed that for simplicity all of the following NHS professionals should be referred to as Noctors.
* Advanced Nurse practitioner
* Physician Assistants
* Anaesthesia Practitioners
* Consultant physiotherapists
* Consultant Nurse practitioner
* Emergency Care Practitioner
* Nurse Consultant
