Micro-airlines

Micro-airlines typically fly fewer than 500,000 passengers a year, operating what amount to essential air services in remote, peripheral, undeveloped or under-populated regions of the world. Typically, they operate turbo-prop aircraft which are often pre-owned and older than the industry average; many are capable of STOL (short take-off or landing) performance.
Operations by micro-airlines sustain many communities on islands, in jungle/desert locations and on the outer borders of many countries. The sector is not represented by any industry body, such as IATA or regional airline associations, and therefore exists below proper oversight and legislation.
