Louis L. Carter

Louis L. Carter (born 1972) is founder and CEO of Best Practice Institute (BPI).<ref name="ref1"/><ref name="ref2"/> In addition to his work with BPI, Carter has written eight books on best practices and organizational leadership,<ref name="ref3"/> the latest of which is titled Best Practices in Talent Management: How the World's Leading Corporations Manage, Develop, and Retain Top Talent,<ref name="ref14"/> published by Pfeiffer<ref name="ref12"/> in late 2009.
Educational Background & Early Career
Born in New London, CT, Louis L. Carter holds a BA in Economics and Government from Connecticut College and Brown University (1996).<ref name="ref5"/> He later attended Columbia University, where he earned a MA in Social and Organizational Psychology(2001) as well as being awarded membership in Kappa Delta Pi. Carter’s research focused on conflict resolution and organization development, and he studied at Colombia’s International Center for Cooperation and Conflict Resolution (ICCCR),<ref name="ref6"/> founded by social psychologist and conflict resolution researcher Morton Deutsch, as well as under his advisor Warner Burke,<ref name="ref7"/> who holds Columbia’s Edward Lee Thorndike Professorship of Psychology & Education and Education Program Coordinator, Graduate Programs in Social-Organizational Psychology.<ref name="ref8"/>
Carter began his career as a consultant with Gemini Consulting, a division of Capgemini (Cambridge, MA, 1996) where he provided strategic analysis and management consulting to Fortune 500 organizations. Following Gemini Consulting, he became Director of Best Practices at Linkage, Inc,<ref name="ref13"/> an international provider of professional training and coaching services located in Lexington, MA (1998-2001), and was later named Linkage, Inc’s Vice President of Research (2004-2005). At Linkage, Carter headed the action research programs with Warren Bennis, Noel Tichy, Daniel Goleman, and Marshall Goldsmith among other thought leaders. He began the first study of leadership development best practices with Warren Bennis and Marshall Goldsmith in 1998 entitled Best Practices in Leadership Development,<ref name="ref15"/> published by Jossey Bass Pfeiffer/John Wiley & Sons in 1999. The study interviewed 350 leaders across various Fortune 500 organizations to identify top critical success factors for best practice leadership development programs.<ref name="bnlink"/>
Work with Best Practice Institute
Carter founded Best Practice Institute (BPI) in October 2001.<ref name="ref9"/> Best Practice Institute has been described as an association “which provides services in the design, development, management of best practice programs, research, and publications in strategy, human resources, leadership and organization development.”<ref name="ref4"/> In Louis Carter’s own words, “Best Practice Institute’s purpose is to promote positive organizational, professional, and personal change.”<ref name="ref5"/> Specific services offered by the organization include learning sessions, webinars, conferences, research publications, and what that company terms a “knowledge and certification portal.”<ref name="ref9"/> As of December, 2010, BPI reported a subscriber base of 42,000 members.<ref name="ref10"/>
In addition to his work at the Best Practice Institute and publications, Carter has lectured at several established institutions, such as the Tsinghua University School of Management in Beijing, Seton Hall University and Jackson State University.
