Marshal D. Carper

Marshal D. Carper is an accomplished writer. With over 600 published articles and three published books (one in stores already, two on their way), all distributed to bookstores across the United States, he is both a significant author and an important member of the martial arts community.
Marshal D. Carper (born January 12, 1987) is an author from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Education
Carper graduated from California University of Pennsylvania in the spring of 2009 with a bachelors in Creative Writing. Associate Professor Alan Natali (author of Woody's Boys and Brown's Town) mentored Carper, teaching him both the technical process of writing and the nuances of publishing. Carper credits his success as a writer to the instruction that he received from Natali.
Career
Carper began writing professional at 19. He completed a contract writing character dialogue for The Black Sigil, a Nintendo DS title produced by Studio Archcraft and released in 2009.
In 2007, Carper began writing a weekly column for Lockflow.com, a mixed martial arts site focused on techniques and strategies for jiu-jitsu, submission grappling, and mixed martial arts. He was later promoted to Editor-in-Chief and began producing a weekly podcast called "The Lockflow Show." The show ran for 22 episodes and ended when Carper went on a hiatus to complete his first book, The Cauliflower Chronicles, a travel memoir about living in Hilo, Hawaii and training at the BJ Penn MMA Academy, published by Victory Belt Publishing. Carper has since returned to writing a weekly column for Lockflow, but he did not return to the Lockflow Show, choosing to instead dedicate the bulk of his time to writing for Victory Belt.
While working for Lockflow.com, Carper contributed multiple articles to Ultimate MMA Magazine (formerly Ultimate Grappling Magazine), Fight! Magazine, and The Escapist.
In addition to the Cauliflower Chronicles and his article writing, Carper co-authored Marcelo Garcia's Advanced Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Techniques with world champion grappler Marcelo Garcia and fellow Victory Belt author Glen Cordoza and co-authored Mastering Triangle Chokes with Neil Melanson, the head grappling coach at Xtreme Couture. He is currently in the process of researching and writing his fourth book.
Personal Life
Carper actively trains Brazilian jiu-jitsu. He earned his blue belt from Renato "Charuto" Verissimo in April 2008 at the BJ Penn MMA Academy in Hilo, Hawaii. Upon returning to his hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania the following May, he forfeited his blue belt to show respect to his original instructor, Sonny Achille, a Pedro Sauer black belt. Achille promoted him to blue belt in June and to purple belt in July 2010.
Carper is engaged and actively visits Pittsburgh area high schools and colleges to share his experiences as a writer to students. He also teaches Brazilian jiu-jitsu classes at California University of Pennsylvania.
