Lungbutter

Lungbutter is a coloquial term used to refer to an errant bit of mucus in the back of the throat. The earliest usage of the term as a title was probably the Punk-Rock publication "Lungbutter". It has also been used as a name by a long string of bands.

The earliest known band of this name was located in northern California from the late 80's to the late 90's. They performed as a 3 piece or occasionally a 4 piece. They made use of heavily effected instrumentation, attempting to bring a little of the experimentalism of the gothic and industrial scenes to the hardcore punk rock circles they moved in. They had a habit of interspersing their set and demo tapes liberally with samples. Eventually going so far as to run music concrete tape loops for the entire duration of their sets while the band played along, as if oblivious to the noise.
In the mid 1990's a few Northern California expats in Bremen Germany played out under the name Lungbutter. Apparently they were fully aware of the American band, it was their idea of a joke.

A Canadian cousin surfaced in 1996 in Regina, Saskatchewan. Apparently disbanding six years later in 2002 after the death of their drummer.

In the first half of the 2000's another iteration of Lungbutter surfaced in Pasadena. Again it is a Punk band with funk and Psychedelic influences. Apparently the act existed from 2003 until 2006.

Almost immediately another Lungbutter springs up in London England in 2006. Again it is a Punk band though a bit more in the hardcore direction than most previous incarnations. It appears to have been a short lived project which lasted no more than a year.

In Belfast Northern Ireland another Lungbutter is founded. Details are not forthcoming on the origin or continued existence of the band. This particular variety is more metal and grindcore oriented.

In Nashville Tennesee yet another Lungbutter seems to have occurred. Details are not available concerning the founding, members or continued existence. It appears to be on the silly side of punk.
