Lichterman, Boleslav Vladimirovich

(14 October 1902  - 20 January 1967).
Boleslav Vladimirovich Lichterman (sometimes spelled Likhterman) () was a prominent Professor, Doctor of Medical Sciences. Positions and titles held also include:
Chief, Institute Clinic for Treatment of Nervous Diseases.
Chairman, Yalta Branch, All-Union Society of Physiotherapists.
Member, Board of All-Union, All-Russia, and All-Ukrainian Societies of Physiotherapists.
Editorial Board, Voprosi Kurortologii, Physiotherapii i Lechebnoi Physicheskoi Kultury.
Since 1929, Boleslav had worked at the I.M. Sechenov State Research Institute of Physical Methods of Treatment, founded by Professor A.E. Scherbak in Sevastopol, and changed in title on moving to Yalta in 1944, to Institute of Physical Methods of Treatment and Climatotherapy.
He was the author of 4 monographs and 104 other scientific works on the role of the nervous and nervous-vegetative systems, especially in relation to balneology and physiotherapy in the treatment and prevention of nervous and endocrine disorders.
He wrote many papers on the effect of high and ultrahigh frequency currents on the healthy and diseased organism, as well as the direct and reflex effect of these physical agents, resulting in the development of focal and nonfocal applications of ultrahigh frequency currents through collar, belt and other electrodes. Several studies on the reflex effects of electrophoresis with iodine, calcium, zinc, penicillin and other ions.
Developed a calcium collar electrode method. Studied the role of medullar vegetative centers and brain cortex in explaining the general effects of electrophoresis; combined spa treatment of neurasthenic syndromes, trauma and seasonal diseases.
Biography
* 14 Oct (1 Oct old style), 1902. Born in Simferopol, Tavricheskaya Gubernia in the family of a private lawyer Vladimir (Vulf) Aaronovich Lichterman. Mother: Anastasia Stanislavovna Lichterman (born Urstein).
* 1910-1920. Attended M.A. Voloshenko Men gymnasium, Simferopol. Among his teachers were K.A.Trenev, P.M. Kaz’min, N.K. Gudzii. Graduated with the golden medal.
* 1920-1925. Studied at the Medical Department, Crimean (Tavrichesky) University, Simferopol.
* Oct 1925 - Nov 1926. Military service, Chernomorsky Navy, Sevastopol.
* Dec 17, 1926. Married Sarra Evseevna Brusilovskaya, who later became a teacher of English.
* Dec 1926 - Jun 1928. Head of psycho-neurological and physiotherapeutic cabinet of Bashkirean Narkomzdrav, Belorezk
* Jun 1928 - Sep 1941. Neurologist-physiotherapist of the Sevastopol city policlinic and consultant of the Gorzdrav First Soviet Hospital.
* Jun 1929. Ordinator at the I.M. Sechenov State Research Institute of Physical Methods of Treatment, Sevastopol. Member of the Committee for implementation of short waves in therapeutic practice.
* 1932. Became a Chief of the Clinical Department and Neurological Clinic at the I.M. Sechenov State Research Institute of Physical Methods of Treatment. Became a Docent (Associate Professor).
* 1936. By decision of the RSFR Narkomzdrav Qualification Committee, was conferred the degree of the Candidate of Medical sciences and an academic rank of the Senior research fellow. Published the monograph “On therapeutic treatment of short waves” (jointly with M.A. Borodina, N.M. Linchenko, M.M. Orlov).
* 1939. Boleslav V. Lichterman was awarded the “Excellence in Healthcare” prize by the USSR Narkomzdrav
* Sep 1941 - Jul 1943. Together with the I.M. Sechenov Institute, was evacuated to Borovoe resort (Kazakhstan), where worked as a Chief of the Clinical Department in the Hospital for the wounded. At the same time, was a consultant at the Red Army Central Tuberculosis Sanatorium.
* 1942. Became ill with pulmonary tuberculosis.
* Jul 1943 - Oct 1944. Together with the I.M. Sechenov Institute, was transferred to Kislovodsk, where continued his work as Chief of the Clinical Department and Neurological Clinic. Also was a leading neuropathologist of Evacohospital no. 5404.
* 1944. Was awarded the medal “For defense of the Caucasus” by the Presidium of the Higher Soviet of the USSR.
* Nov 1944. Together with the I.M. Sechenov Institute, returned to Yalta.
* 1944 - 1964. Chief, Neurological Clinic of the I.M. Sechenov Institute of Physical Methods of Treatment and Climatotherapy. Board member of All-Union, All-Russia, and All-Ukrainian scientific societies of physiotherapists. Member of the Scientific council of the Caucasusean and Crimean resort group. Founder and Chairman of Yalta branch of the All-Union Society of Physiotherapists. Member of the editorial board of the journal “Voprosi Kurortologii, Physiotherapii i Lechebnoi Physicheskoi Kultury”; co-editor of the section on Physiotherapy and Balneology in Great and Small Soviet Encyclopedias.
* 1945 Was awarded two medals: “For the Victory over Germany” and “For valiant labor during the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945” by the Presidium of the Higher Soviet of the USSR.
* 1948. Published the monograph “Ultrahigh frequency therapy of war-traumatic damages of periphery nerves” (Moscow, Medgiz).
* 1948. By decision of the USSR Higher Attestation Committee, based on the recommendation of the United Scientific Council of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences, Boleslav V. Likhterman was conferred the degree of the Doctor of Medical sciences for the set of papers without a formal defense of the dissertation, and the academic rank of the Professor in Nervous Diseases.
* 1952. For exceptional service in developing the medical science, was awarded the Order of Red Banner of Labor by the Presidium of the Higher Soviet of the USSR.
* 1958. Published the monograph “Treating neurasthenia patients in spa environment” (jointly with B.F. Zimovskiy; Moscow, Medgiz).
* 1964-1967. Professor, Scientific consultant at the Neurological Clinic of I.M. Sechenov Institute.
* 1965. Was elected the honorary member of the All-Union Society of Physiotherapists and Balneologists.
* 1966. Became ill with an acute leukemia.
* Jan 20, 1967. Died. Buried at the Yalta city graveyard.
* 1969. Published (posthumously) the monograph “Treating initial cerebral atherosclerosis in spa environment” (jointly with V.A. Ezhova, E.S. Volkov, L.A. Kunitsyna; Moscow, Medicine).
