Leah Smith (December 25, 1988) is a soul singer, songwriter, pianist, recording artist, musician and composer. She was born in Rochester, New York and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by her parents; her mother a teacher and father a minister. Leah, who began writing songs at age 11, has been blessed to sing throughout the United States as well as in Africa, Asia, Europe and Australia. She has been on stage with Grammy Award winners Aretha Franklin at 50th Annual Grammy Awards, taking part in a segment saluting Gospel music, Alicia Keys at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards for a performance of George Michael's "Freedom '90." A product of Philadelphia, Leah performed her first solo at age four. Soon she was singing regularly in her church and at school. She began singing with the Temple University Program for Gifted Young Musicians at age nine. She recorded with the Baltimore based group Sandtown and performed in front of tens of thousands at Christian Music Festivals and Billy Graham crusades. Leah attended Creative and Performing Arts High School in Philadelphia before leaving for Houston at age 16 to sing with Israel and New Breed. Through this collaboration she toured the world and joined forces with Israel Houghton. She has done background vocals for Joann Rosario's album, Joyous Salvation; Israel and New Breed's Grammy Award Winner album, A Deeper Level; and both background and leading vocals for Sound of the New Breed albums, Freedom and Kingdom. Leah holds the 2008 title, "Best of Philly Rising" at World Cafe Live, one of the premier performing venues in the Philadelphia region. From that title she was awarded a free 5 song EP which she is now working on and slated to be release in Summer 2009. Leah is known for her refined musicianship, powerful lyrics, and soaring voice comparable to Amel Larrieux. In her music you can clearly hear implicit biblical implications because Leah is a Christian. She attends Epiphany Fellowship in North Philadelphia and sings on the praise team. Leah has been called one of the best kept secrets of our generation.
