Lau Gek Poh

Lau Gek Poh (b. 1917 - 4 April 2008) in Tawau Sabah, was a philanthropist, industrialist and also a founder and chairman of the Lau Gek Poh Foundation.

Lau Gek Poh was 19 when he arrived in 1936 in the then British North Borneo where he started off as a shop assistant in Sandakan before moving to Tawau. In 1946, Lau formed the Hap Seng Co in Tawau. Hap Seng, which means “Unity and Success”, was primarily involved in the timber business then. The astute entrepreneur, later became the largest exporter of round logs from Sabah and earning himself the title "timber tycoon of Sabah”. Lau also diversified by holding dealerships in the Mercedes-Benz marque and entered into property development and investment, fertiliser and general trading, financial services and built a vast plantation empire.

Lau Gek Poh foray in business came in the early 1970s when he founded the Hap Seng Group of Companies which mainly was involved in the timber business. In 1991, He incorporated the Lau Gek Poh Foundation.

On April 2008, Lau Gek Poh died at Kuala Lumpur Prince Court Medical Centre.
