Lambros Tapinos

Lambros Tapinos is an Australian politician. Since November 2008 he has been a Councillor for the City of Moreland in Melbourne, Australia. He was elected Mayor of Moreland in 2009 and is a former President of the National Union of Students (NUS) Victorian Branch.
Tapinos was born in Brunswick, Victoria.
Student Politics
Tapinos joined the Australian Labor Party in 1997 and was National Secretary of Australian Young Labor from 2003-2004. He was President of the NUS Victorian branch in 2002, and on the Victoria University Student Union Executive Committee in 2001, 2002 & 2006.
Councillor and Mayor
Tapinos ran for election as Councillor to the City of Moreland South Ward in November 2004, losing with approximately 17% of the primary vote. Four years later, in November 2008, Tapinos increased his primary vote to almost 24%, electing him second of three South Ward Councillors. A month later, the eight Labor Party Councillors in Moreland voted together to elect Tapinos Mayor at the age of 29. a clean city campaign designed to remove dumped rubbish and graffiti, the introduction of an extra rates tax for commercial gaming venues and debate surrounding a commemorative statue of King Leonidas in Brunswick's Sparta Place. At the end of Tapinos' term, the Council's Labor members split over the election of the 2010 Mayor. Tapinos brought the issue to the Victorian ALP Disputes Tribunal, ultimately leading to the three dissenting Councillors being suspended from the ALP.
