KU Leuven Model United Nations Student Association (KULMUN) is an independent non-profit student association. Starting from 2010, KULMUN offers the MUN concept to students of the KU Leuven, University of Leuven. KULMUN promotes the values of the United Nations, increases public awareness about international topics, and supports the concept of active citizenship among students. Another goal is to strengthen the relations between the civil society and national and international authorities. Since its foundation in 2010, KULMUN was acknowledged as the official MUN Team of the KU Leuven and has gained several awards at other Model United Nations conferences. The association is currently under the patronage of the President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy. Association The association counts 50 active members, all studying at the KU Leuven. KULMUN offers the students the chance to develop their rhetorical and social skills in an international environment. Being a member of KULMUN improves the insight in international politics. Hereto, KULMUN organizes monthly workshops, realistic political simulations and trips abroad to participate in international MUN conferences. KULMUN delegations have been successfully sent to various conferences in Europe, among which OXIMUN (Oxford University), CUIMUN (Cambridge University), EuroMUN (Maastricht) and BIMUN (Bonn). Conference The KULMUN Student Association organizes an annual international MUN conference at the beginning of March. The 2013 edition took place from February 27 until March 3 and hosted almost 200 participants, from over 30 different countries. Part of the conference is hosted in the Old Beguinage of Leuven, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Newswire The KULMUN NEWSWIRE is a platform for educating political journalists, framed in the structures of the Model United Nations concept. It is an integral part of the KULMUN student association. It is a project based on the conviction that the media is “the fourth power” in state politics. Situated in the KULMUN framework, a framework that strives to familiarize youth with diplomatic and political education, together with raising the public awareness of the activities of the international arena, the KULMUN NEWSWIRE started of as the official media body of the KULMUN International Conference. Since October 2012, the NEWSWIRE became the first MUN media to run all year long, providing information about international politics, KULMUN and other MUN conferences.
