Activities and Recent Achievements
The University of Haifa MUN's sessions are 3 hours long and take place in the form of simulations. The participants simulate the activities of UN bodies and committees, such as the Security Council, General Assembly, The International Court of Justice, etc. Participants are assigned a country other than their own within the above committees. The participants' goal is to then research, debate, and present their country's opinion on the discussed issue in the particular simulation. The issues raised in the simulations vary according to the committees' or organizations' field of operation.Since its establishment in early 2011, the society has reached great accomplishments. The first MUN conference the society participated in was the EuroMUN, which took place in Maastricht, the Netherlands. There, its 4 member delegation [http://yedhaifa.co.il/?211-18-2589 won 2 "Best Delegate" awards] from the 600 participants in the conference. The society later participated in the IsraMUN conference, held in Rishon LeZion, Israel, where its 14 member delegation (making it 10% of the participants in the conference) (35% of the awards). Furthermore, the society plans to hold its first national MUN conference in the University of Haifa in December 2011.
Additional Society Activities
Other than routine MUN Society activities, The Haifa MUN Society works to promote Israel's International image (also known as Israeli hasbara) in various ways. It has hosted foreign delegations from the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, and Switzerland, and conducted seminars regarding the situation in Israel by both its Arab-Israeli and Jewish-Israeli members.
While participating in the EuroMUN, the Society's delegation met the Honorary Council of Israel to the Limburg region, and received vast media coverage by local Dutch newspapers and websites, presenting life in Israel according to the Jewish, Muslim and Christian delegate members. Delegations from universities across the globe were also in attendance, allowing the Israeli students to engage students from nations hostile to Israel in open dialogue.
All Society activities are conducted in English, and pertain to various issues that are usually not sensitive in a political sense in Israel. This makes the Society a more inviting environment to all students from the University, including Arab-Israeli and foreign students from the University of Haifa International School.
