Knee baby

The term knee baby is an idiom that refers to the penultimate child in a family with typically four or more children, although it is sometimes used in families of only three children. The term alludes to the child that was at the mother's knee when the youngest child (or baby) was in the mother's lap or arms.
Its origins are ambiguous, but the term is commonly used in the American South and is used most prevalently in North Carolina and the surrounding states.<ref name=RH/>
