Joshua Paul

Joshua Paul (born October 18, 1968) is a New York based travel, portrait and car photographer. Josh shoots editorial, advertising and corporate assignments worldwide.
Joshua Paul was born in Fresno, California in 1968. He currently lives in Brooklyn, and keeps a studio in New York City’s Lower East Side.
He received his BFA in photography at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, following his Bachelors in Arts from the University of Washington, where he studied English and Creative writing, in Seattle, Washington.
He began shooting as a student at Art Center, for Nike Design, The Hotel Bel-Air, and Absolut Vodka, winning two published competitions: Absolut Paul - The Exposure Photo Collection and The Hollywood Collection. Both images were published in American Photo.

After graduating, Josh began to shoot for the Los Angeles Times Magazine. He shot more than forty feature assignments, and four covers before moving to New York in 1999. The same year, he was featured in Photo District News Magazine, (PDN), with a full profile of his career, so far, titled, “Rising Star.”
After moving to New York, he took two personal trips: One to Iceland for three weeks, and one to Cuba for four weeks. Combined, he shot over 500 rolls of medium format film with his Rolleiflex, (twin lens reflex), cameras.
These new portfolios immediately gained him recognition in New York, and helped him land feature assignment work, for Outside Magazine, Travel & Leisure Magazine and Saveur.
He has shot a wide range of subjects for a diverse group of editorial, advertising and corporate clients, including: Outside Magazine, Outside Go, Men’s Journal, The New York Times Magazine, United Airlines, Departures, Travel & Leisure, Endless Vacation, The Nature Conservancy, Real Simple, Saveur, Gourmet, Oprah, Smith College, Harvard, M.I.T., Channel 4 U.K., and others. He has also shot for many business magazines including Fortune, Money, Smart Money, Fast Company, Inc., and Bloomberg Markets.
His advertising and corporate clients include annual reports for Tiaa-Cref, AmSouth Bank, Whitewave Foods, Fed Ex, and Vulcan.
He has won recognition and awards in Communication Arts, The Society of Publication Designers, (SPD Awards), American Photography, and Time Inc.’s, Magazine of the year award for SKI, with his image of a monkey in a ski suit, taken in Sochi, Russia.
In 2002, Outside Magazine sent him paddling down the Hippo and Crocodile infested Lugenda River in Mozambique for four weeks. He and four others were the first to ever paddle the river. Two months later, Outside sent him to the Republic of Georgia for an assignment about saving the National Parks of Georgia, for four weeks. There, he mistakenly entered Azerbaijan illegally, and had to walk for 12 miles in the dark, through Viper infested fields, to sneak back across the border.
The adventure assignments continued with a four week hike through China and Tibet, during the SARS epidemic. This was followed by a three-week tour of the Arctic, aboard the U.S. Coast Guard Ice Breaker, “Healy,” to observe, “Does Global Warming
Exist?"
Less sensational was his next assignment to travel to Peru, to cut trees and make homemade rafts to paddle a tributary through the Manu Reserve to the Amazon River. He reached the tributary fifteen pounds lighter, when they ran out of food on the third day, and had to survive on plantains- as they couldn’t fish in the flash flood conditions.
While the adventure travel assignments continued, he has also had a number of luxurious assignments. He has traveled to Croatia twice, once driving from Zagreb to Dubrovik. The second trip, exploring the truffle region of Istria, in the north.
He has photographed a dozen stories for United Airlines in flight Magazine, Hemispheres. He has shot the feature, “3 Perfect Days,” in New York, Tokyo, Berlin, St. Maartin, St. Thomas, and Puerto Rico.
While he has become known as a Travel Photographer, Josh considers himself a portrait photographer, and the majority of his assignments, and personal projects are shooting portraits. He prefers to photograph artists, writers and people of achievement.
Most recently, he has begun to photographing cars, which have been a lifelong obsession. He has photographed cars for Automobile, Bloomberg Markets, Men’s Journal, and Porsche Cars of North America. He has been invited to shoot the 2009 Trans-Syberian Rally for Porsche, which is a 15 day rally race from Moscow to Ulaan Bataar, Mongolia. His skills in portraiture, adventure, and action should benefit him well for this shoot. As well as driving, as he may become a co-pilot!
In collaboration with Luxury Travel and Exotic Car journalist Jason Harper, they have driven and photographed the Aston Marin Rapide, The Aston Martin DBS, The V8 Vantage and Vantage Roadster. They have also driven the Porsche Panamera Turbo, the Ford GT 40, Ferrari California, Lamborghini LP560, Lotus Exige, and many others.
Josh has traveled and taken assignments in over 500 cities in 65 countries.
