1st Lt. Joseph D. Helton Jr. (September 30, 1984 - September 8, 2009), 732d Expeditionary Security Forces Squadron, Detachment 2 flight commander (police officer), a resident of Monroe, Georgia, killed in hostile action in 2009, while on a mission near FOB FALCON, Mahmudiyah District of Baghdad, Iraq, after an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle while under hostile fire. He was 24. Leader of the ROTC unit at Monroe Area High School, he received a service with military honors while being interred at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia. He was a graduate of the United States Air Force Academy, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Survivors include his parents, Jennifer Helton of Monroe and Joseph D. Helton of Kingston, Washington; three sisters, Jeanne Rhea of Athens, Georgia; Jessica Helton of Monroe, Georgia and Jordanne Helton of Valdosta, Georgia; and two grandfathers, Victor Holden of Monroe and Dennis Helton Jr. of Pensacola, Florida. His family moved from the Pensacola area to Monroe when he was two years old.
