John Francis McCarthy (born 1859) was a New Zealand railway engine builder and engineer. Early life McCarthy was born in Auckland and attended there.<ref name="Cyclo"/> Engineering Mccarthy served an apprenticeship in an Auckland foundry and at the Auckland railway workshops. In 1882 he was engaged in the manufacture of locomotives in Sydney for the New South Wales Government and in the building of steamers for the service to Paramatta. He also worked in the Government tramway workshops. Having obtained a "large experience of engineering in all its branches", McCarthy returned to New Zealand and rejoined the New Zealand Government railways in Auckland, where he became foreman of the engineering portion of the workshops. In 1890 he became foreman in the Petone Workshops, Wellington and the next year became foreman of the whole Auckland workshop. He was appointed as the manager of the Addington Railway Workshops, the largest in New Zealand, in 1901.<ref name="Cyclo"/>
