Later on he served as the chief of psychiatry staff at the same hospital. In 1993 he founded Rochester Center for Behavioral Medicine (RCBM), a clinical research site and outpatient clinic for the treatment of individuals with mental illness and substance abuse disorders.
Currently, he serves as the medical director of RCBM. In this position, he sits on several boards and leads a team of psychologists, nurses and counselors in working with patients. Speaker
Young is the founder of the Michael Golds Memorial ADHD Conference, which is held annual at the Oakland Community College Orchard Ridge Campus in Farmington Hills. He is also a regular speaker at this conference
Notable research
Young has been primary investigator in a number of clinical trials involving antidepressant, ADHD and, bipolar medications. In a paper titled Fibromylagia,Chronic Fatigue, and Adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in the Adult, he wrote that as individuals with AD/HD grow up, they are more likely to develop treatment-resistant depression, chronic fatigue, and perhaps chronic pain syndromes such as fibromyalgia. In recent years, theories linking Chronic Fatigue Syndrome to viral infection have been discredited. This theory, that chronic fatigue is the result of inattentive AD/HD, is novel.
*Chronic Lyme Disease and ADHD
Young performed a research in 2012 to determine if there was any link between Chronic Lyme disease (CLD) and ADHD. Participants for the survey were drawn from the 2009 Michigan Lyme Disease Association Conference. A total of 58 adults with CLD and a control group of 26 adults without CLD participated. On the ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS), adults with CLD endorsed more ADHD symptoms than control participants. Results were significant for both inattentive and hyperactive subunits and the combined type. CLD was linked to ADHD in adults as a result of the research.
Publications
Young has authored multiple textbook chapters, three books, and more than 80 publications. He regularly reviews articles for The International Journal of Neuropsychopharmacology. The book goes through a number of other diagnoses that are confused with ADHD, including anxiety and depressive disorders in the initial chapters. In the later chapters, it addresses substance abuse and reviews the treatment modalities, including medication and therapies. Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board included this book in their list of resources for parents. Psychiatric Services called it a "well-researched and equally well-written tome". It was also reviewed in the Journal of Family Therapy.
Contermporary Guide to Adult ADHD
He published his second book, Contemporary Guide to Adult ADHD with Handbooks in Healthcare Company in 2009. The book is about the adults who suffer from ADHD. It outlines clinical guidelines and recommended pharmacotherapies for the treatment of adult men and women who suffer from the anxiety and restlessness related to ADHD. As of 2012 more than 50,000 copies of this book have been sold. titled When Your Adult Child Breaks Your Heart: Coping with Mental Illness, Substance Abuse and Other Issues. The book is set to release in December 2013 by Lyon Press. The book presents scenarios, advice and strategies for coping with adult children who are addicted to drugs or alcohol or are severely mentally ill. Publishers Weekly gave a positive review, calling it "an excellent introduction to mental illness" and "a moving and vitally important book on mental illness and parenting".
