The Gerrard Berman Day School (GBDS) is a Jewish day school serving Northern New Jersey. GBDS is part of Solomon Schechter Day School Association. The Gerrard Berman Day School was founded in 1985 by a group of families with the support of Rabbis of synagogues in Pompton Lakes, Wayne, and Paterson, New Jersey. The first eighth grade class graduated in 1999. The school has students from Nursery-2 through 8th grade. Name of the School The school is named after Gerrard Berman, one of the founders of the school. The Berman family is still active in the school. Every year, there is an assembly sponsored by the Berman family honoring Gerrard Berman. The Middle school of GBDS is named The George and Arline Haar Middle School. Administration Rabbi Ellen Bernhardt, Head of School Sylvia Berger, Assistant Principal and Director of Admissions Robert Smolen, General Studies Coordinator and Middle School Director Susan Scher, Early Childhood Coordinator Amy Glazer, Community Relations Director Marilyn Kohler, Bookkeeper Nancy Kennedy, Administrative Assistant Marcy Heinen, Administrative Assistant The current President of the Board of Trustees is Alex Paley. Curriculum GBDS has a bilingual program. Students learn English and Hebrew. Also, both Secular and Jewish Studies are incorporated into the curriculum. The school also has a developing arts program, with a school play happening each year. The school also has a choir and percussion group. Athletics The GBDS co-ed basketball team is open for all students from grades 5-8, and is coached by the Physical Education teacher.
