Gary Michael Houston, also known as E.D.O.T, is an American rapper and
singer. His stage name is an acronym which stands for "Every Drop Of
Talent," a phrase stemming from his desire to be recognized by his
musical talents and not his lineage. He is African-American, with some
Native-American, Dutch, and Irish ancestry.
Early Life
Born in Livingston, New Jersey on September 16, 1986, Gary Houston is
the first of two children, and only son of Michael and Donna Houston.
Growing up in South Plainfield, New Jersey, E.D.O.T comes from an long
line of entertainers and has been influenced by music since birth. He
is the eldest grandson of gospel legend "Cissy Houston," nephew of pop
Icon "Whitney Houston," and cousin of soul diva "Dionne Warwick."
As soon as he was old enough to fly, E.D.O.T was touring the world. He
would quickly become accustomed to spending time in foreign countries
such as Japan, Italy, Germany and even South Africa; where he had the
opportunity of meeting the then newly elected President Nelson Mandela." It was because of these experiences that he gained a great
affinity of world cultures and various types of music. In addition to
his highly successful relatives, E.D.O.T. 's father, Michael Houston,
was an accomplished writer and musician who owned and operated his own
independent record label, LandLord Records. According to E.D.O.T., it
was here that he discovered his love for Hip Hop and decided he wanted
to pursue a career in music. When not attending school, E.D.O.T. was
sneaking into recording sessions constantly trying to showcase his
skills. It wouldn't be long before he was joining in on the
creative process by writing choruses for other artists and even recording his
very own song at the age of 8 yrs old.
He attended both private and public school systems eventually
graduating from South Plainfield High School in 2004. He was awarded a
full athletic scholarship to play basketball at Point Park University
in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where he received two bachelors degrees;
one in Business Management and the other in Sports, Arts, and
Entertainment Management.
Career
Houston has released 5 full-length projects, which include 4
successful independent albums (Emerica; Corruption 1-3) and one
compilation mix tape hosted by Pittsburgh’s own DJ B-Chenck (aka DJ
Cash Crook). He is currently working on new material he plans to
release in "2012" and is constantly growing his fan-base with what he
likes to call the "E-merican Experience." He believes "you can be
anything you want to be. I just want people to dare to be different.
You can't let society define you. Most listeners will only listen to
what is deemed as being mainstream and by mainstream I mean
"acceptable." Hip-Hop is a culture, a lifestyle that has many forms and
includes people from all walks of life. I want people who listen to my
music to experience that first hand. I want to change lives…not just
minds." Refusing to live up to anyone else’s image of what he “should
be”, Houston continues to pushes his own personal limits daily and vows
to never fall into the surroundings that just keep him comfortable nor
will he forget his mission with his success.
